Trombonists Glen David Andrews, Corey Henry and Revert “Peanut” Andrews led a large brass band through the Tremé neighborhood to honor the life of 89-year-old Richard Kendrick, Sr. on March 4, 2023.
Before the procession began, family and friends waited outside for the service to end.
Drummers Derrick Tabb on snare and Terence Andrews on bass drum provided powerful rhythms as the procession took to the streets from the Charbonnet Funeral Home. Tabb is the co-founder of the Roots of Music after-school program.
The parade of second liners stretched nearly a full city block as seen below in front of Craig Elementary School on St. Phillip Street across the street from the Tremé Community Center.
On the corner of Ursulines Avenue and N. Villere Street, the family and the pallbearers took the coffin out of the horse-drawn hearse and carried it to a house on the block. The band riffed on “Let Your Mind Be Free,” while family members continued the celebration of life.
At the end of the procession, the pallbearers carried his coffin nearly two blocks as the band jammed and people danced. It was a truly joyful send-off and celebration of a life well lived.
