Jazz Funeral for Delmon "Dankie" Marzett
He was a member of the Prince of Wales Social Aid and Pleasure Club
A group of young brass band musicians, each from different ensembles, came together to play at a jazz funeral on Saturday, September 20. After a long service at the Israelite Baptist Church in Central City, the band started with the traditional hymn “A Closer Walk With Thee.” One of the mourners (pictured below) joined in and sang to the heavens. As the procession with the horse-drawn hearse began, the band played a somber medley of “I’ll Fly Away” into “Jesus on the Mainline” and then back to “I’ll Fly Away” before going uptempo.
The parade headed up Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. before turning on Baronne Street en route to a house on the section of Terpsichore Street named for Professor Longhair. It passed several apartments that have been turned into short term rentals, providing an only-in-New Orleans moment for some visitors.
